Why Lakshmi Puja Is the Heart of Diwali, and What It Teaches Us About Lasting Prosperity
On Diwali evening, the whole house slows down for one moment. The rangoli is done, the diyas are lit, the doors are left open, and the family sits together for Lakshmi Puja. Of all the rituals across the five days, this is the one most homes build the night around. Here is the story behind it, and what it quietly says about prosperity.
Who is Goddess Lakshmi?
Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth, fortune and well-being. According to the Puranas, she rose from the ocean during Samudra Manthan, seated on a lotus, and chose Lord Vishnu as her consort. Diwali falls on Amavasya, the darkest night of Kartik (Purnimanta calendar; Ashwin in the Amanta calendar). It's believed that on this night Lakshmi visits homes that are clean, well-lit and welcoming. That is why doors and windows are often left open, and diyas are placed at every threshold.
Why Lakshmi Puja is the heart of Diwali
Diwali carries many stories. In the north, it marks Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya. In the east, it's also a night for Kali Puja. But in most homes and businesses, the central ritual of the evening is Lakshmi Puja.
For traders and business families, the Diwali period has long marked the start of a new accounting year (the Samvat year). Many still perform Chopda Pujan, worshipping fresh account books before the first entry is made. Prosperity, in this tradition, is something you account for carefully.
Lakshmi is chanchala
One of Lakshmi's names is Chanchala, the restless one. The old belief is that she doesn't stay where she isn't respected. Carelessness, waste and disorder are said to send her away.
This is also why she is worshipped alongside Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the god of wisdom. Wealth, the tradition seems to say, lasts only when it is paired with good judgement. In many homes, Kubera, the keeper of the treasury, is worshipped too. One brings wealth, one guards it, and one guides how it is used.
What the story teaches us about lasting prosperity
The rituals of Lakshmi Puja read almost like a quiet set of money habits:
A clean home: Know what you have and where it is. Clarity comes before growth.
A lamp at every door: Stay attentive. Prosperity rarely arrives in the dark.
Ganesha beside Lakshmi: Pair wealth with wisdom. Understand what you invest in before you invest.
New account books: Keep track What you measure, you can manage.
The lotus: Lakshmi sits on a flower that grows steadily from still water. Lasting wealth is usually built slowly and patiently, not overnight.
Prosperity that stays
The real wish of Lakshmi Puja is not sudden fortune. It is prosperity that settles in and stays, through regular income, careful choices and a little patience. For many families, that means a mix of savings and investments they understand well, reviewed from time to time, and chosen with their own goals in mind.
Happy Diwali
As you light the diyas tonight, we hope your home is filled with warmth, good health and prosperity that lasts well beyond the festive season.
